Hey Scout,
I actually just noticed the same speedo rattle on my savage. Seems like the easiest, least messy solution is to take off the gas tank so you can get to the speedo mounting bolts then tighten the three you see there all the way down till they feel pretty tight. I just did this tonite and the rattle is now completely gone - I agree with you though, the noise was driving me nuts as well!
